David Walters is a Franschhoek based studio potter well known for his exquisitely thrown white porcelain ware and reduction fired ceramics. He has a BA Fine Arts degree from the University of Natal. David has been potting for over thirty five years and his previous studios were at Caversham Mill, in the Natal Midlands and the Particular Pottery, Kenninghall, Norfolk, England. David and Michelle were responsible for the concept and formation of the Midlands Meander in the early 1980’s, while Davids sister, Jenny Hobbs, came up with the name. David’s wheel throwing skills are legendary and recently he has been specializing in customized porcelain dinner ware designed in consultation with chefs or private clients. Budding gourmands can come to the studio and discuss their dinnerware needs with David, who will design and make his porcelain plates, bowls and many more things – so that they get just what they want – custom made for their needs. He also makes stand alone pieces in Porcelain and white stoneware, Raku and pit fired pieces. He has exhibited all over SA and the UK. Amongst his many achievements are the following. David is a Fellow of Ceramics Southern Africa, and has been a selector and an award judge for both National and Regional Ceramics SA Exhibitions. He is the motivator of the annual ‘David Walters and Friends’ Ceramics Exhibition held at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley – now in its tenth year. He also coordinates the annual Franschhoek ‘Art in Clay’ Festival, where six local art galleries show contemporary ceramics for a month – around October/November. David Walters and daughter Sarah Walters’ work can be found in the studio gallery at The Ceramics Gallery , 24 Dirkie Uys Street, Franschhoek, or at Artefact, Daniel Hugo Street, Franschhoek – visitors welcome all year round. There is a Studio Flat in the garden to rent should you wish to stay over. Please phone 021 8764304 or visit www.davidwalters.co.za for all enquiries and orders.
