WILHELM, JOHN ANTHONY

John was born in East London, South Africa in 1947 and attended Florida Park High School in Johannesburg. He has travelled extensively (Europe and Australia), and had a chequered career doing a variety of jobs. From 1977 to 1979, at the age of 30, he became a full-time student at Natal University, Pietermaritzburg (non-degree), studying under Hilda Ditchburn, Juliet Armstrong and David Walters. In 1980 (to 1982) he was apprenticed to Bryan Haden in Gordon’s Bay and specialized in wood-fired reduction functional ware. In 1981 he started lecturing part-time at the Stellenbosch Technical College until 1982. At the same time he started Mill Street Pottery in Strand with partner, Verena Baraga, working with slip decorated functional ware. He was then introduced to under glaze earthenware colours by Chris Silverston, and in 1989 he had his first one-man exhibition in The Potter’s Shop, Kalk Bay. He currently produces high fired (earthernware 1160˚) functional ovenware in plain colours (mainly green, white and blue) decorated with stamps featuring for example a bee or frog. He does wheel work as well as molded forms and sometime combines both principles to form pedestal pieces. He supplies various galleries and sells from his studio in Somerset West. He works to order. His hobbies are reading, sudoku, cooking and fishing!
